The New Jersey Youth Symphony Bassoon Ensemble is a dynamic eight-member group dedicated to exploring all things bassoon and contrabassoon. Open to young musicians from across the state, the ensemble offers a unique opportunity to dive into rich and engaging repertoire while honing skills in both performance and reed making. With a focus on camaraderie and learning, members will connect with fellow bassoon enthusiasts, share their passion for music, and develop their craft in a supportive and fun environment under the direction of Dr. Joseph Swift. Make a joyful noise! Wharton Arts announces the return of its CAFÉ (Creative Aging for Everyone) Choir. In partnership with the Summit Area YMCA, Wharton Arts faculty will work with participants for eight weeks, during which the choir will learn several songs with piano accompaniment in preparation for a final concert at the Wharton Black Box Theater in Berkeley Heights. Imagine the soothing sound of the harp—now imagine possessing the magic to bring its voice to life! Whether you play another instrument or are ready to take your first step into the world of music, the harp is a gentle companion for all beginners. Taught in a supportive group environment, this introductory group harp class unites a beautiful instrument with a fun, social experience.
All theater incorporates movement, whether it’s a play or a musical! This class teaches students fundamentals in various theater dance styles as well as tools and techniques for auditioning and building choreography. Over the course of 10 weeks, the class will learn techniques from different genres, learn choreography built especially for the students, and build their own number with the help of the instructor. The class will culminate in a final showcase where the students will perform the new choreography they have learned and their own original piece!
This group class for the young singer teaches the fundamentals of vocal technique through the preparation and performance of musical theater repertoire. This class is a terrific stepping stone towards private voice or more advanced musical theater courses. Students learn in an ensemble setting: breath, support, posture/alignment, resonance, basic rhythm and music notation, and sight singing skills. The course culminates in a performance at the end of each season.
Primi Passi is a non-auditioned music exploration class for young students in grades K–2. The singing-focused curriculum is devoted to developing basic music literacy and vocal skills, accomplished through active learning of musical games, rhythmic activities, folk dancing/movement, visual learning, and playing simple percussion instruments. The ensemble repertoire focuses mainly on unison music, with an introduction to two-part singing through beginning canons. A key focus is also making new friends, building confidence, and the joy of singing with others!
