Welcome to NJYS’ 48th Season: Practice HOPE

Dear NJYS Alumni,
Welcome to the 48th season of the New Jersey Youth Symphony!
Our theme this year is Practice HOPE. Hope is more than optimism—it asks something of us. As musicians, we RECEIVE from those who came before us, PRACTICE through dedication, listening, and collaboration, and then PASS IT ON through our music and service to others.
And who better to embody this spirit than our NJYS alumni? You are an important part of our story, and the music, friendships, and connections we’ve built together continue long after graduation. I hope you’ll explore our exciting season, come visit us anytime, and join us for our concerts.
We also have some wonderful opportunities to reconnect this year:
  • January 5, 2027 Alumni Night! Come back, reconnect with friends, and make music with us!
  • February 21, 2027 – Music Across Generations Concert, Nicholas Music Center at Rutgers University. This year, we’re bringing together parents, alumni, staff, and students to form our very own NJYS Community Orchestra to perform.
  • March 7, 2027 – NJYS Playathon at The Mills at Jersey Gardens. Another wonderful opportunity to gather and celebrate our NJYS community!
I’m especially excited about the Community Orchestra. What a beautiful way to put our season theme into action, musicians across generations coming together to share the joy of making music! I hope many of you will fill out the Community Orchestra Interest Form and join us. Once we have a solid roster, I’ll send out the music and rehearsal schedule. We’re planning to rehearse on February 19th and/or 20th at NJYS and again on the afternoon of February 21 before our 5:00 p.m. concert. Please fill out this form and submit by October 30th.
NJYS Community Orchestra – Airtable
And if you’d rather not play but would love to be part of the weekend, please come anyway! Let’s make this a meaningful gathering where we can reconnect, catch up, and celebrate our shared NJYS journey. More details to come!
In the meantime, please explore this alumni page, where you can reserve free tickets to our upcoming concerts, read our alumnus, Tim Tobitsch’s reflection on our Finland and Baltics tour this past summer, and share your own news with us. We’d love to hear what you’ve been up to and celebrate your stories with our NJYS community!
I hope to hear from you and see many of you soon.
Let’s keep practicing HOPE and passing it on together!
With love and gratitude,

Helen H. Cha-Pyo
Music Director & Conductor
