We are so happy to announce that the NJYS Orchestral Camp is back and in person. Join us this summer for a fun and rewarding string or wind/brass experience in either the Summer Winds/Brass/Percussion Session or Summer String Session. Each day, both sessions will join forces to create the NJYS Summer Festival Orchestra and they will perform a final in a concert on July 9.
Summer String Session Students will work on building their confidence through ensemble performance and teamwork, while improving their playing skills and technique. Interested in trying viola or string bass during the summer? Our students are offered a chance to try another string instrument during the camp, and take lessons as part of the doubling program. This two-week experience will culminate with a final performance, showcasing String and Symphony Orchestra.
Summer Winds/Brass/Percussion Session is designed to continue progress built during the school year for the young wind player. Students will play in full camp wind ensemble with music arranged for the camp’s specific instrumentation. Every student will learn to play a secondary instrument from the family of “less common” band instruments. This ranges from bassoon, oboe, trombone, horn, and tuba and varies from year to year. Students will chose their secondary instrument on the first day of camp with the help of our Summer Winds Camp staff.
Available option this year: Any student embarking on a new instrument for the school year or contemplating a switch can spend the entire camp on the new instrument. In addition to playing opportunities, students are introduced to advanced musical concepts including arranging and composition. At the end of the two weeks, students will perform on both their primary and secondary instruments in a final concert open to the public.
Summer Winds Camp welcomes two types of students:
- Early stage players: 1 to 2 years of experience, beginning to learn the full potential range. Beginning to understand dynamics/articulations/ensemble playing. Beginnings of scales and arpeggios as well as chromatic scale. Can follow a conductor and understand intonation (though not always knowing if they are sharp or flat).
- Later stage players: 3+ years of experience on a primary instrument and/or have been asked or have been thinking about playing another, less common instrument (bassoon, oboe, horn, trombone, tuba, etc). Understanding of how to control air and fingers for the purposes of wind playing.

As part of the String Chamber Music Camp, young musicians will have an opportunity to refine their artistic skills and interact with other chamber musicians. All participants will be offered daily coaching by the string faculty and a self-guided rehearsal. We will evaluate applications as they are received on a rolling basis. Eligible students are strongly encouraged to form their own chamber group prior to applying. If you already have a pre-formed quartet or trio and all members meet the eligibility requirements then we will honor your ensemble/admit your ensemble.
