EMPATHY
“From rehearsals to performances, Wharton Arts truly embraces the concept of empathy—understanding and sharing the feelings of others. In the diverse ensembles at Wharton Arts, students are provided with opportunities to foster purposeful relationships with their fellow musicians and faculty. Wharton Arts students learn empathy socially, through shared experiences, as well as musically, by lifting one another up through the pieces we perform.
As a member of NJYC, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing and witnessing many acts of empathy. For instance, in Coriste’s Soprano I section, one of our major focuses is unity and connection, which can only be achieved through empathy. While we’re singing, our various backgrounds, emotions, and experiences blend together as one, our hearts beat as one, and our voices unify as one. Each singer assumes the responsibility of making their fellow choristers feel heard. Wharton Arts’ empathy extends beyond just the music we perform and share but also within the family it creates. I’ve never left choir without receiving multiple hugs, being asked how my day was, or getting dinner afterwards with my friends (and oftentimes, all three!). When I’m having a rough day, I can count on NJYC to lift my spirits. The empathy that I’ve been shown by Wharton Arts members and staff has instilled myself and so many of my peers with confidence, leadership, comfort, and joy. The inclusion of empathy in this year’s theme will further Wharton Arts’ mission of providing a supportive musical learning environment to all.”
