REPRESENTATION
“Music has the power to connect people universally, regardless of their differences. But this doesn’t mean that these differences are negligible; in fact, it’s the opposite. Representation—whether it’s in our repertoire, leadership, or audience—affirms each and every student that they, too, have a place in our community. For some, it’s a sign that they are welcomed; for others, it’s a chance to learn about cultures and experiences outside their own, expanding their knowledge of the world.
At the New Jersey Youth Symphony, I’ve experienced my share of fascinating repertoire from sources I’d never have explored on my own. This commitment to inclusion has kindled my curiosity and enthusiasm for unfamiliar pieces of music and given me the confidence to share my own experiences. Most importantly, I feel secure and supported in the community of artists that I’ve found here, and I hope every Wharton Arts member feels the same.”
