It is with great pleasure that I share these stories with you—stories of parents, students, volunteers, and even a camp counselor, all of whom have given so much to Wharton Arts because of the joy and fulfillment it brings into their lives. These narratives are woven together by a common thread: the profound impact that learning music has had on their children from early childhood through high school, inspiring them to give back in meaningful ways.
Every parent we spoke with described how their children have blossomed in confidence, poise, and creative self- expression through music. Mistakes are embraced as stepping stones. Each day of practice is a a way of nurturing their children’s growth and self-assurance. Remarkably, many parents shared that their children take initiative to practice music and excel in school without prompting. Could the self-discipline and passion for music translate into other areas of life? Their parents certainly believe so.
The students I’ve had the pleasure to meet are calm, self-assured, and thoughtful. Many of our interviewees spoke about the supportive and caring community they’ve found at Wharton Arts and their desire to ensure that other students have the same experience.
Whatever challenges these young people may face, the performing arts offer a refuge—a time to immerse in beauty, learn, have fun together, push beyond the ordinary, and discover talents previously unknown. The parents we spoke with displayed an inspiring humility, accepting their children’s gifts with quiet astonishment and grace. There was no boasting only profound support and encouragement for their children’s happiness and dreams.
These stories reflect the true spirit of Wharton Arts—a community where students of all ages are encouraged to be proud of themselves, to give back, and share their gratitude.
Tyler Selvig, who wrote two of these stories, and I are deeply grateful for the opportunity to connect with many families who care so deeply about their children and the Wharton Arts community.
All my very best,
Gina
