What do students need to bring to their first lesson?
I ask new strudents to bring anything they may be currently working on, which for students new to lessons can be band music or something they printed off the internet! All stduents need to bring a pencil and a blank notebook for assignments to each lesson. Students should come to their first lesson with an instrument as well as a cleaning rod and cloth.
Learning Goals
The first few lessons with a student are to gauge not just their level of playing but also their goals, which we then structure the pace and intensity of lessons around.
Supply List
Customized to each student, though based in the classical tradition. Most of the time, regular assignments will include a tone study, an etude, and a solo piece, though this will change based on upcoming needs such as auditions. I regularly incorporate sight reading practice through duet reading into lessons, as well.
Time Commitment
Lessons range from 30-60 minute weekly. Practice time will vary largely student to student and will be goal-based rather than time-based.
Progress
30, 45, and 60 minute weekly lessons and introduction to the NJYS Flute Choir, Flute Forum, and Fortissimo ensembles.
