Melissa Hughes

Melissa Hughes is a dedicated music educator, mezzo-soprano, and adjunct professor at Montclair State University with a passion for cultivating confident, expressive, and independent young musicians. As a middle school choir director, she leads a choral program of more than 400 students, creating an environment where students are encouraged to grow both musically and personally. In addition to her work at the middle school level, Melissa serves as an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, where she continues to contribute to the education and development of future music educators and musicians.

Melissa earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Music Education. As a mezzo-soprano, she brings her experience as a vocalist and performer into the classroom, using her musicianship to inspire students and foster a lifelong appreciation for choral music.

Her teaching philosophy emphasizes the development of strong music theory skills alongside meaningful performance growth. Through modeling, organization, and a play-like approach to learning, Melissa strives to make music education engaging, accessible, and purposeful. She also values student-centered learning, encouraging students to take ownership of their musical journey, develop confidence, and experience personal growth through music.

At the heart of Melissa’s teaching is the belief that every student has the ability to find their voice, both literally and figuratively.
