Biography
A native to Northern New Jersey, Dana Nix is a versatile musician and educator. She has taught various band instruments to students of all ages and levels, and holds a K-12 Teaching Certificate for Music in the state of New Jersey.
She received her Bachelor of Music from Rutgers University’s Mason Gross School of the Arts, with a double concentration in Flute Performance and Music Education. She then attended New York University’s Steinhardt School where she received her Master of Music in Flute Performance. Dana has studied under Kaoru Hinata, Keith Underwood, Yoobin Son, and Kathleen Nester.
She has performed with the Rutgers Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonia Orchestra, Rutgers Bands, NYU Orchestra 1, and regional orchestras as Principal Flute, Section Flute, and Piccolo. She has performed for POTUS Barack Obama while at Rutgers, Robert Winn at the Oxford Summer Flute School in the United Kingdom, for Linda Chesis in “The Well Prepared Flutist” masterclass in New York City, as well as masterclasses for Keith Underwood, Mimi Stillman, and Valerie Coleman. Dana plays second flute and piccolo in the Summit Symphony Orchestra.
Dana is extremely grateful to have the opportunity to share her love of music making and teaching with students across New Jersey. Music education had a life changing effect on her, and she is so blessed to be able to share that with all of the children she works with. She has taught in Paterson, NJ in the public schools and with the Paterson Music Project. Dana maintains an active private studio and continues to perform as a freelance musician. She is a faculty member of the Pingry School in Short Hills, NJ and the Wharton Arts Performing Arts School in Berkeley Heights, NJ. Students of Dana’s have gone on to successfully audition for regional bands and orchestras throughout NJ.
When not performing or teaching, Dana enjoys spending time with her husband, son, daughter, cat, and dog at their home in Mendham, NJ!
