Your Backstage Pass with Director of Orchestra Administration Stacy Square
As the Director of Orchestra Administration at NJYS, I am behind-the-scenes ensuring that every aspect of our ensembles runs smoothly. From the initial auditions to the final note of the season, my role is to create an environment where our young musicians can thrive.
A typical year at NJYS begins with the excitement and anticipation of auditions. It’s always a highlight when the kids bring their instruments into the building – some of them are nervous and others are bursting with confidence. My job is to make sure the process is seamless, which includes organizing schedules with judges, communicating with parents, and ensuring that every student feels supported. One silly thing that often happens during auditions is the “uncovered instrument walk-out” after the audition, when students nearly walk out of the building without placing their instrument back in the case because they are so relieved it’s over!
As we transition into the regular season, my focus shifts to rehearsals and concerts. Every rehearsal involves a Tetris-like game of logistics – coordinating the set up of rooms with our amazing Operations Assistants to ensure all music stands and chairs are perfectly arranged and managing attendance. I work closely with the Artistic Director, Helen Cha-Pyo; our Manager of Orchestras, Roger Sweet; our NJYS Librarian, Sarah Butler, and our NJYS conductors, to ensure every rehearsal is productive and fun!
One of my favorite parts of the job is the concerts. There’s a magical moment when the lights dim, the audience hushes, and the first notes fill the hall. Knowing the hard work and coordination that went into making that moment possible is incredibly rewarding. Seeing the students’ faces light up with pride and joy after a successful performance reminds me why I do what I do.
What truly inspires me to keep doing my job is the transformation I see in the students. Watching a shy, hesitant child grow into a confident performer over the course of a year is deeply fulfilling. Their dedication and passion for music is contagious, and it is an honor to be a part of their musical journey.
My favorite part of the job is the sense of community we build in this musical family. A unique bond is formed when we all work together towards a common goal, and being at the heart of that is something I cherish.
