Beginner Jazz Piano

Ages: 7+
10 Week Course. Explore the American Classical Tradition–Jazz! Learn to improvise in basic chord structures and the 12-bar blues. Students will learn how to play in a small ensemble, improvise with other instruments, and develop a walking bass line. Students must have a minimum of 2 years private lessons and know 2 octave scales up to four accidentals.

Piano as a Second Instrument

Ages: 7+
10 Week Course. Build complementary skills to your primary instrument! Learn how to accompany yourself or others using primary chords and build proficiency at the instrument. Students will learn how to read a lead sheet, learn to play repertoire appropriate for their proficiency level, and learn to play piano in an ensemble setting. Students with up to 1-year experience welcome.

Sing and Play

Ages: 7+
10 Week Course. Would you like to learn to play and sing your favorite pieces?  This class gives students the tools to accompany themselves while singing.  Students will use their knowledge of scales, chords, and sight-reading to create suitable accompaniments to vocal pieces that make it easy to play and sing at the same time.  Students must have a minimum of 2 years in guitar or piano, with a working knowledge of the major and minor scales and chords.

Small Ensembles

In this 15-week course that runs January through May 2018, students will be paired with other students on a comparable level to be coached by Performing Arts School faculty members.  Students will have a choice of a Sunday afternoon or Thursday evening class culminating with a performance on May 6, 2018.

Placement date is Saturday, December 9th; time to be announced. Register for Small Ensemble Placement.

Songwriting and Composition

Ages: 7+
10 Week Course. This class will focus on learning the basics of how to write lyrics and compose a song.  Other topics covered will be music theory and harmony relating to songwriting and how to record a song.  The class will finish with a performance and recording.

Simply put, students will learn to improvise and think quickly on their feet.  They will explore the fundamental principles of improvisation through exercises in agreement, commitment, spontaneity and listening. Monologues and scenes are used to examine techniques an actor uses to establish/develop a character.  Drama games are used to focus the bold, outspoken child, draw out the quiet child or inarticulate child and help them reach into themselves to discover their full potential.

Developing Your Craft Workshop

Ages: 10-16
Developing Your Craft is an audition prep class that offers students training in voice, acting, and dance.  As actors, students learn about character development, monologue and scene study, as well as how to read for a part at an audition.  As singers, students develop healthy singing techniques, learn how to choose appropriate repertoire, and prepare 16 bar audition cuts.  As dancers, students learn pivotal movements, steps, and terminology to prepare them for any musical theater dance audition.  The class culminates with a mock audition.  Students will receive written and verbal feedback from instructors, and will leave the course with an audition-ready monologue, two contrasting 16-bar audition songs, and exposure to learning choreography in a fast-paced setting.  Developing Your Craft is recommended to students interested in our Company class, Musical Theater Workshop, school productions, Community Theater, and any other outside theater opportunities.

Company Instrumental Ensemble

Ages: 10+ By Audition or Teacher Recommendation Only
The Company Instrumental Ensemble is a 12-week program dedicated to the analysis, and performance of the score of a musical, culminating in two fully staged performances if an original musical in collaboration with the Musical Theater Company.  During rehearsals, ensemble students learn valuable sight-reading skills, teamwork, and the adaptive, dynamic experience of playing in a pit band for a live musical.  Participants in the Instrumental Ensemble gain experience arranging their own parts.  Under the direction of composer, pianist, and teaching artist David Seamon, the Ensemble works alongside the Musical Theater Company to present a uniquely student-driven production.
