Mission Statement

The mission of the WIPA Musical Theatre Arts Department is to provide every student the foundational tools needed to flourish in the disciplines of musical theatre, voice, drama, and dance. This is provided through excellence in instruction, educationally and professionally-geared performance opportunities, and the learning of life skills through social connections inherent in the Wharton musical theatre program.

Pathways to Musical Theatre

Ages: 5-7
Pathways to Musical Theatre serves as an introduction to the essentials of Musical Theatre. Students are introduced to the concept of “triple threat,” proficiency in music and voice, drama, dance, as well as rudimentary music notation and apply these elements in a showcase performance at the end of each season.

Explorations in Musical Theatre

For budding performers wanting to polish their skills. Students receive training in musical theatre focusing on voice, dance, and acting. Students learn the fundamentals in a group setting to gain confidence and team building skills. Live piano in each rehearsal. Based on casting audition, each student will perform at the end of the season. *Black jazz shoes required.

This 12-week dance class is designed to reinforce the fundamentals and techniques learned in the Explorations to Musical Theatre class. Students will also learn fundamental techniques in Tap. Students will receive more individualized attention to help them improve their skills.*Jazz and Tap shoes required.

Musical Theatre Workshop

Ages: 11-18
Musical Theater Workshop is ideal for the experienced triple threat performer.  Students expand their knowledge of musical theatre repertoire, gain a greater understanding of advanced musical theatre concepts and terminology, and increase their practical expertise by working with live accompaniment in every rehearsal. Over the course of 27 weeks, students hone their skills in voice, dance, and acting as they prepare for two performances of Rodgers and Hammerstein scenes, songs, and dances that highlight each and every performer.  The class is taught by Wharton Musical Theatre Arts Director, Timothy Cole, and experienced performer, choreographer and instructor, Jessica Lombardi. *Black leotard and black character shoes required.

Sight-Singing for Singers

Ages 7+
Sight-Singing for Singers is a fun-filled, structured approach to successful sight-singing. From fast-paced games to individual practice to singing multi-part exercises as a group, we will learn the tools we need to become fearless sight singers. Any musical theatre group class students receive a 5% multi-activity discount when enrolling in the class.

Musical Theatre Company

MTA CompanyAges: 10-18 By Audition Only
Company is our premier musical theater class for advanced performers.  Acceptance is by audition only.  Once accepted into the Company, students are guided through an intensive professional rehearsal process by our top faculty members, Wharton Musical Theater Arts Director, Timothy Cole, and experienced performer, choreographer and instructor, Jessica Lombardi.  Over 27 weeks, students will be cast and prepare for two full performances of the Stiles and Drewe favorite, Honk, a theatrical re-telling of “The Ugly Duckling.”  Rehearsals include a live accompanist. Students work throughout the year in collaboration with the Company Instrumental Ensemble, led by faculty member David Seamon.

Company Instrumental Ensemble

Ages: 10+ By Audition or Teacher Recommendation Only
The Company Instrumental Ensemble is a 15-week program dedicated to the analysis, and performance of the score of a musical, culminating in two fully staged performances of Honk in collaboration with the Musical Theatre Company.  During rehearsals ensemble students learn valuable sight-reading skills, teamwork, and the adaptive, dynamic experience of playing in a pit band for a live musical.  Participants in the Instrumental Ensemble gain experience arranging their own parts as well as performing alongside experienced faculty members.  Under the direction of composer, pianist, and teaching artist David Seamon, the Ensemble works alongside the Musical Theatre Company to present a uniquely student-driven production of the Stiles and Drewe favorite, Honk.

Developing Your Craft Workshop

Voice 2Ages: 10-18
Developing Your Craft is an audition prep class that offers students training in voice, acting, and dance.  As actors, students learn about character development, monologue and scene study, as well as how to read for a part at an audition.  As singers, students develop healthy singing techniques, learn how to choose appropriate repertoire, and prepare 16 bar audition cuts.  As dancers, students learn pivotal movements, steps, and terminology to prepare them for any musical theater dance audition.  The class culminates with a mock audition.  Students will receive written and verbal feedback from instructors, and will leave the course with an audition-ready monologue, two contrasting 16-bar audition songs, and exposure to learning choreography in a fast paced setting.  Developing Your Craft is recommended to students auditioning for our Company class, school productions, Community Theater, and any other outside productions.

Explorations in Voice

Ages 7-10
This group class for the young singer teaches the fundamentals of vocal technique through the preparation and performance of musical theatre repertoire.  Explorations in Voice is a terrific stepping stone towards private voice or more advanced musical theatre courses.  Students learn in an ensemble setting: breath, support, posture/alignment, resonance, basic rhythm and music notation, and sight singing skills.  The course culminates in a performance at the end of each season.

The Singing Actor (formerly Cabaret)

This group course is perfect for the young singer that has previous vocal or performance experience.  Students improve their vocal technique while working on creating and expressing character through singing ensemble and solo pieces.  Based on seasonal themes assigned by the instructor, singers learn songs from various genres including: Musical Theatre, classical, folk, and more.  In addition to group class, students enrolled in this course have the unique opportunity to participate in private weekly coachings with the instructor to further their vocal and dramatic ability.  The course culminates in a performance at the end of each season.

The Singing Actor Coaching Series

Ages 10-13
This coaching series is a companion to The Singing Actor.  Students meet privately with the instructor weekly to work on solo and/or ensemble pieces from class to improve vocal technique and dramatic expression.  These weekly coachings are the perfect introduction to private vocal study for the young singer/actor.
