Pathways to Musical Theater

Ages: 5-7
Pathways to Musical Theater serves as an introduction to the essentials of Musical Theater. Students learn about the  “triple threat” skills of voice, drama, dance, and rudimentary music notation and apply these elements in a showcase performance at the end of each season.

Triple Threat Teaser *NEW*

Ages: 7-10
Triple Threat Teaser teaches students the fundamentals of musical theater performance.  Each week students attend classes in voice, dance, and acting with our excellent Wharton faculty.  Throughout the semester students build and improve their skills in each aspect of triple threat, all while working towards a final showcase that features each student in scenes, songs, and dance.  Relevant musical theater repertoire is chosen by instructors to showcase enrolled students each season.

Creating A Character

Ages: 7-10
Creating A Character is the drama component of Triple Threat Teaser.  This class teaches students how to act in group scenes and monologues.  Students will learn about character development, expression, and projection on the stage.

The Singing Actor

Ages 7-10
The Singing Actor is the vocal component of Triple Threat Teaser that teaches student the basics of vocal technique through musical theater study.  Students will learn about: breath, support, diction, projection, expression, and much more.

The Dancing Actor

Ages 7-10
The Dancing Actor is the dance component of Triple Threat Teaser that teaches students the basics of dance for musical theater performance.  Throughout each semester students learn terminology, combinations, and styles of dance to be performed in the final showcase.

Explorations in Musical Theater

Ages: 7-10
For budding performer wanting to utilize his/her triple threat skills in a performance setting. Students audition for, and then put together a show from start to finish. During the first 3 weeks, students receive audition materials and preparation.  Shows are chosen based on the students enrolled in the class each season.  Performances include live accompaniment. *Black jazz shoes required.

Musical Theater Workshop

Ages: 10-15
Musical Theater Workshop is ideal for the experienced triple threat performer.  Students expand their knowledge of musical theater repertoire, gain a greater understanding of advanced musical theater concepts and terminology, and increase their practical expertise by working with live accompaniment in rehearsals.

  • Final class date is a mandatory dress rehearsal.
  •  Showcase performance will be held at 6 PM on the last class day.

Musical Theater Company **NEW**

Ages: 10-18 By Audition Only
Company is our premier musical theater class for the motivated performer.  Acceptance is by audition only.  Once accepted into the Company, students are guided through an intensive creative and professional experience. Guided by faculty members Timothy Cole and David Seamon, students will create their own musical production with an original script and music based on Grimm’s Fairy Tales.  Rehearsals include a live accompanist.  Company allows students to work together creatively, and in performance as an ensemble during this 27-week course.

Company Instrumental Ensemble

Ages: 10+ By Audition or Teacher Recommendation Only
The Company Instrumental Ensemble is a 12-week program dedicated to the analysis, and performance of the score of a musical, culminating in two fully staged performances if an original musical in collaboration with the Musical Theater Company.  During rehearsals, ensemble students learn valuable sight-reading skills, teamwork, and the adaptive, dynamic experience of playing in a pit band for a live musical.  Participants in the Instrumental Ensemble gain experience arranging their own parts.  Under the direction of composer, pianist, and teaching artist David Seamon, the Ensemble works alongside the Musical Theater Company to present a uniquely student-driven production.

Developing Your Craft Workshop – Short Course

Ages: 10-16
Developing Your Craft is an audition prep class that offers students training in voice, acting, and dance.  As actors, students learn about character development, monologue and scene study, as well as how to read for a part at an audition.  As singers, students develop healthy singing techniques, learn how to choose appropriate repertoire, and prepare 16 bar audition cuts.  As dancers, students learn pivotal movements, steps, and terminology to prepare them for any musical theater dance audition.  The class culminates with a mock audition.  Students will receive written and verbal feedback from instructors, and will leave the course with an audition-ready monologue, two contrasting 16-bar audition songs, and exposure to learning choreography in a fast-paced setting.  Developing Your Craft is recommended to students interested in our Company class, Musical Theater Workshop, school productions, Community Theater, and any other outside theater opportunities.

Explorations in Voice

Ages 7-10
This group class for the young singer teaches the fundamentals of vocal technique through the preparation and performance of musical theater repertoire.  Explorations in Voice is a terrific stepping-stone towards private voice or more advanced musical theater courses.  Students learn in an ensemble setting: breath, support, posture/alignment, resonance, basic rhythm and music notation, and sightsinging skills.  The course culminates in a performance at the end of each season.
